Canvas To Concept – Series 5
Welcome to Canvas to Concept, a series where I dive into the connection between art and interior design. As a designer and decorator, I find endless inspiration in artwork, whether it’s a painting, print, photograph, sculpture, or abstract form, and I’m always fascinated by how colours, textures, and composition can completely transform a space.
I’ll choose a piece that resonates with me and translate its visual language into a concept board, showing how artistic elements shape the mood, depth, and personality of an interior. The right piece of art doesn’t just complement a space, it grounds it, creating a sense of cohesion, balance, and purpose.
This series is more than just a creative exercise, it’s a celebration of artistic exploration. I love working with a range of styles, and this process lets me discover and highlight incredible artists and products along the way. Experimenting with different aesthetics brings me so much joy, and I can’t wait to share this journey with you.
To make the experience even more immersive, we’ve woven in a custom intro composition that sets the tone for each concept. Through animation, a static board comes to life, creating a dynamic visual story. And with an atmospheric soundtrack, each piece becomes even more engaging, deepening the connection between art, mood, and design.
Continue to join me to see how design and space can be shaped through an artistic lens!
Kerry Armstrong is one of Australia’s most celebrated contemporary artists, known for her expressive, gestural paintings that blur the line between abstraction and figuration. Her work is deeply emotive—built through instinctive brushstrokes, rich pigment, and a fearless exploration of form, femininity, and movement.
I was drawn to Merna for its raw, almost sculptural quality. The way the paint moves across the canvas—thick, layered, and unapologetically expressive—feels both intimate and powerful. There’s a softness in the blush tones, contrasted by the depth of the darker hues, creating a tension that feels alive.
In translating this piece into a dining room concept, I wanted to honour that balance between expression and control. The space feels tailored, but never rigid—layered with texture, contrast, and moments of quiet drama.
The feather-inspired curtain fabric echoes the fluid, sweeping gestures of the painting, while the botanical wallpaper softens the space with a subtle, textural backdrop—much like the layered brushwork in Merna. Deep blue cabinetry grounds the scheme, allowing the softer pinks and neutrals to sit with intention rather than overwhelm.
The intro composition continues this narrative—pairing delicate florals with the butterfly’s sense of movement and transformation, capturing the same interplay of softness and energy found in the artwork.
For me, this is what makes art so powerful in design—it sets the tone, the rhythm, and the emotion of a space. It doesn’t just sit within the room, it quietly shapes everything around it.
Inspired by what you see? Let’s bring your space to life through thoughtful, art-driven design. Whether you’re starting fresh or looking to reimagine an existing space, We’d love to help shape an interior that’s as unique and layered as you are.
