When our clients relocated from Darwin to Glenelg to embrace a slower, more coastal chapter as empty nesters, their newly purchased apartment offered the promise of lifestyle—but little in the way of warmth, functionality, or personality. The interiors felt tired and dated, with limited storage and an awkward underutilised room that lacked a clear purpose.

Our brief was to transform the apartment into a home that felt calm, considered, and effortlessly liveable—one that balanced practical everyday needs with a relaxed sense of refinement.

A key challenge lay in reimagining a secondary room to function as both a home office and guest retreat. Originally separated from the main living area by a fixed sliding door, the space felt disconnected and inflexible. By removing the solid partition and introducing a softer screening solution, we created a room that could remain visually open and connected to the apartment when not in use, while still offering privacy and comfort for overnight guests.

To create cohesion throughout, we began with a new flooring palette, selecting timber-look oak vinyl planks that brought warmth, durability, and practicality underfoot—an ideal choice for apartment living, including life with the family’s much-loved Boston Terrier.

Custom joinery became central to the transformation. Along the living area, we designed a full-length storage solution that delivered much-needed functionality without overwhelming the space visually. Finished to blend seamlessly with the surrounding walls, the joinery recedes quietly into the architecture, while floating timber shelves introduce warmth and rhythm, drawing the eye toward the apartment’s natural light and coastal outlook.

In the guest room, a carefully integrated combination of storage and a compact study nook ensured the space worked hard despite its modest footprint. Tropical palm wallpaper behind the desk offered a subtle and personal nod to the clients’ years in Darwin—bringing character, memory, and a touch of playfulness to the otherwise practical design.

Layered throughout with fresh paint, contemporary furnishings, soft textiles, and a palette of blues, greens, warm neutrals, and soft coral, the apartment now feels entirely transformed. Existing artworks were thoughtfully integrated alongside curated new pieces, creating a home that feels both deeply personal and beautifully resolved.

The result is a relaxed coastal retreat that feels lighter, more functional, and wholly reflective of this new chapter.
