Engaged to complete the living room of this newly built home, our brief was to transform an expansive yet under-realised space into something warm, inviting, and worthy of its generous proportions. Positioned at the heart of the home, directly adjoining the kitchen and dining areas, the room had strong architectural bones—including beautiful natural light from an overhead skylight—but little else to anchor it beyond a single sofa.

The design direction drew on the client’s appreciation for mid-century modern forms, softened through a more relaxed coastal lens. Rather than leaning into overt thematic references, the goal was to create a living space that felt elevated, layered, and effortlessly comfortable—somewhere equally suited to quiet everyday living and larger gatherings with family and friends.

To better honour the scale of the room, we reimagined the layout around generous seating, creating a conversation-focused arrangement that comfortably accommodates eight. Clean-lined sofas in soft neutral tones established the foundation, while deep blue velvet swivel chairs introduced a richer moment of contrast, adding both personality and a touch of playfulness to the scheme.

A nuanced palette of sandy neutrals, weathered oak, soft blues, brass, and layered textures created a subtle nod to coastal living without becoming literal. A painterly rug grounded the space, while textured wall finishes and carefully curated artwork added warmth, softness, and visual depth.

Throughout, the material language was intentionally balanced—natural timbers and woven textures sitting alongside marble, velvet, brass, and sculptural lighting to create a home that feels both relaxed and refined. Every element was selected not only for aesthetic harmony, but to create a sense of ease and cohesion with the surrounding spaces.

The result is a living room that feels calm, sophisticated, and deeply welcoming—a contemporary interpretation of coastal luxury designed for real life.
