As the sole interior design firm invited to participate in the 2017 Adelaide Antique Fair, our practice embraced the opportunity to showcase how antiques can be incorporated into a fresh and contemporary context. Our vision revolved around creating a grand master bedroom suite with a seating area, allowing us to demonstrate the seamless integration of antiques into a more modern setting.
The initial task was to seek out exquisite antique pieces that would serve as the foundation for our entire interior design scheme. We carefully curated a Georgian hall table and a decorative circular table, repurposing them as nightstands. Despite their differing shapes, these pieces shared the same height, wood tone, and visual scale, resulting in a harmonious asymmetry. To complete the set, we sourced an antique dresser and mirror, both featuring a similar wood tone.
To infuse the space with a captivating blend of old and new, we artfully combined the antique gems with contemporary custom-upholstered pieces. A plush bedhead, sofa, and bench, all adorned in sumptuous fabrics, seamlessly coexisted with a bone inlay coffee table, a statement lamp, intricately carved wall hooks, and tasteful brass and marble accents. Our intention was to imbue the room with a timeless elegance that exuded coastal charm, complemented by an exotic twist.
The result was a master bedroom suite that captured the essence of classic design while embracing the allure of the contemporary. The interplay between antiques and modern elements created a captivating visual tapestry, showcasing the versatility and beauty of incorporating antiques into a new and refreshing context.
